Movie Review - The Dark Knight

I admit I really wasn't interested in seeing "The Dark Knight." I thought I could wait for the video release; however, I reluctantly went to the theater with my husband, who was very excited about the new batman movie. What a pleasant surprise! This movie was perfect for action lovers, yet had a well developed plot for those who are more interested in a story line. The Batman, played by Christian Bale, is portrayed more as a justice-seeking vigilante than a superhero. He is a billionaire with strength of character, yet physical limitations just like the rest of us, as his scars and bruises reveal at the movie's beginning. Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes, previously portrayed by Katie Holmes. Gyllenhaal gives the character warmth and realism, making her portrayal a vast improvement over the Rachel Dawes of "Batman Begins," the first installment of this comic book turned big screen hit. The film also introduces Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) as Bruce Wayne's rival for Rachel's affection, yet Batman's hope for being Gotham's true hero and relieving him of his duties. The true scene stealer, however, is Heath Ledger as the Joker. Ledger plays the Joker with a warped joviality that will definitely be remembered as one of his best performances. Menacing, mysterious, ruthless, twisted...yet, a criminal genius, the Joker is more than just a physical threat to the people of Gotham. He adds tremendous intensity to the film's plot by reaching into the minds of his adversaries. Overall, the film is compelling, suspenseful, and fast moving. At two and a half hours, the movie kept my attention the entire time and made for an enjoyable Saturday afternoon. Even if you only see one movie this summer, "The Dark Knight" is definitely my recommendation.
